As Senegal prepare to face hosts Morocco in the final of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025, attention has once again turned to the Teranga Lions’ history in the competition.
The final will be played on Sunday, 18 January at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off set for 20h00 local time.
Senegal have previously tasted AFCON glory, winning the tournament in 2021 when they defeated Egypt on penalties. That triumph marked a historic moment for the West African nation, ending years of near misses and establishing them among Africa’s champions.
The upcoming final will be Senegal’s fourth appearance at this stage of the competition and their first since lifting the trophy in 2021.
Their journey to the 2025 final has seen them play all their matches in Tangier, while Morocco will be contesting their seventh game in Rabat. The meeting with Morocco will be Senegal’s first-ever AFCON clash against the North African side, although it will be their 32nd encounter overall across all competitions.
Historically, Morocco have held the upper hand in this fixture, recording 18 wins to Senegal’s six, with seven draws. The two sides have met regularly in World Cup and AFCON qualifiers, as well as at the African Nations Championship.
Their most recent meeting came at the 2024 CHAN in August 2025, where Morocco edged Senegal on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
The final also carries wider historical significance. Morocco become the 15th host nation to reach an AFCON final, continuing a trend that has seen recent host nations go on to win the tournament.
Senegal, however, will be aiming to spoil the hosts’ hopes by adding a second AFCON title to their record.
With Senegal seeking to build on their 2021 success and Morocco chasing glory on home soil, the AFCON 2025 final sets the stage for a compelling contest between two nations with contrasting histories but the same ultimate ambition.
