Stellenbosch FC complete signing of Kaizer Chiefs prospect Gopolang Taunyana

Stellenbosch FC have completed the permanent signing of South Africa youth international Gopolang Taunyana from Kaizer Chiefs, strengthening Gavin Hunt’s squad ahead of the new Betway Premiership season.

The 20-year-old becomes the latest Chiefs player to move to the Cape Winelands club, following the arrivals of Given Msimango and Ashley Du Preez.

Stellenbosch FC announced the signings of Msimango and Du Preez on Tuesday as part of a swap deal that saw winger Langelihle Phili move in the opposite direction to Naturena.

Taunyana’s transfer is a separate permanent move and continues Stellenbosch’s recruitment of young talent. The midfielder progressed through the Kaizer Chiefs development structures and has emerged as one of South Africa’s most promising players in recent seasons.

He will wear the number 21 shirt and could be involved immediately, with Stellenbosch FC confirming that he is in contention for their opening Betway Premiership fixture against Polokwane City on 11 August.

That match would provide Taunyana with an early opportunity to make his professional debut and begin showing his ability at senior level.

The youngster said he viewed Stellenbosch FC as the right club to continue his development, pointing to the team’s reputation for nurturing players and the quality of its facilities and coaching staff.

“First and foremost, I want to thank my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, for the opportunity, because I am very excited to join Stellenbosch FC,” Taunyana told the club’s official website.

“This is a team that is well known for development and having great facilities and coaches, so I’m grateful to be here.

“Growing as a player and a person is the most important thing for me, and I felt that this was the right step for my career and the right environment for me to grow.

“This is an environment where a lot of players have shone in the past, so I’m excited to go on that journey now as well.

“For the team, the thing that makes people the happiest is to compete with the best, win trophies and ultimately succeed as a team, so I hope to be able to look back one day and say we achieved that together.”

Taunyana joins a Stellenbosch side that has built a reputation for developing younger players, while Hunt’s team will now prepare for the start of their league campaign against Polokwane City.

The move adds further depth to a squad that has already been reshaped by the arrivals of Msimango and Du Preez. Both players were part of Tuesday’s announcement, which also saw Phili join Kaizer Chiefs.

Stellenbosch FC will hope Taunyana can make a quick transition from the Chiefs development system to first-team football. His possible inclusion against Polokwane City would give him the chance to begin that process at the earliest opportunity, while also offering Hunt an additional option as the club starts its Betway Premiership campaign.

The transfer follows a period in which Taunyana established himself as a highly regarded prospect within Kaizer Chiefs’ youth setup. He now has the opportunity to continue that progress at a club whose development record was a key factor in his decision to move.

Stellenbosch FC will also be looking to build on the team’s collective ambitions, with Taunyana saying that competing with the best, winning trophies and achieving success together were central to what he hoped to accomplish at the club.
