Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been rewarded for their efforts at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, receiving a $500,000 bonus from businessman Abdul Samad Rabiu despite falling short in the semi-finals against Morocco.
The gesture, intended as recognition of the team’s dedication, courage, and performance throughout the tournament, underscores the value placed on the squad’s commitment even in defeat.
The Eagles’ campaign ended in heartbreak at the hands of the Atlas Lions, who advanced to the final after a tense 4–2 penalty shootout following a goalless draw over 120 minutes in Rabat.
While Nigeria missed the chance to reach the final and vie for a fourth AFCON title, their effort and unity drew widespread admiration, both on and off the pitch.
In a statement addressed to the team, Rabiu praised the squad for leaving everything on the field. “You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch. Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud,” he wrote.
He acknowledged that sometimes even the best efforts do not yield the desired result, but emphasized that the team’s spirit, passion, and unity are what truly matter.
The statement clarifies that the $500,000 is a fulfillment of a previously pledged bonus for the squad’s overall performance rather than a per-player payout, serving as a collective reward for their journey in the tournament.
Rabiu described the payment as a token of appreciation for their remarkable journey and the joy the team brought to Nigerians nationwide.
Looking ahead, the Super Eagles are set to contest the third-place match against Egypt on Saturday, January 17, at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca.
Rabiu encouraged the team to take lessons from this experience, noting that the spirit and resilience displayed will fuel future success.
For now, the $500,000 bonus offers a tangible recognition of Nigeria’s determination and fighting spirit at AFCON 2025.
