Kalidou Koulibaly has underlined the blend of leadership and youthful energy as a defining force behind Senegal’s sustained success, as the defending champions prepare for their AFCON 2025 semi-final clash with Egypt.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, the Senegal captain pointed to consistency at the highest level as proof of the team’s maturity.
Senegal has reached the semi-finals in three of the last four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, a record Koulibaly described as evidence of a group that understands the demands of elite competition.
He highlighted the influence of senior figures within the squad, naming Sadio Mané, Idrissa Gana Gueye, and Édouard Mendy as players who continue to set standards through experience and professionalism.
Koulibaly stressed that their presence gives the team structure, calm, and direction during decisive moments.
However, the centre-back made it clear that experience alone does not drive Senegal forward. He explained that the team deliberately creates room for younger players to express themselves and contribute ideas.
According to Koulibaly, the coaching staff and senior players actively listen to the younger generation, encouraging them to share opinions and ambitions within the group.
He described this relationship as a two-way exchange that strengthens the squad.
The younger players benefit from guidance and knowledge gained through years at the top level, while the senior players draw energy from the enthusiasm, creativity, and fearlessness of youth.
Koulibaly emphasised that this balance keeps the team fresh, motivated, and competitive.
The Senegal captain also spoke about the emotional impact of youthful passion, noting that it brings intensity and joy to the dressing room.
He explained that this dynamic helps the team maintain focus while embracing the excitement of major tournaments.
Looking ahead to the semi-final, Koulibaly left no doubt about Senegal’s ambition. He stated that the objective remains unchanged: to push as far as possible in the tournament.
For him, success means playing the maximum number of matches and reaching the final. He added that achieving that goal begins with a disciplined and determined performance against Egypt.
As Senegal prepares for another high-stakes encounter, Koulibaly’s message reflects a squad built on unity, mutual respect, and a shared hunger for success.
The Lions aim to combine wisdom and youth once again as they chase another AFCON final appearance.
