Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has vowed to defeat Egypt and secure a spot in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, underscoring his squad’s confidence ahead of one of the tournament’s most high-profile encounters.
The remarks came during a press conference on Tuesday, as the West African champions prepared to face the Pharaohs, Africa’s most decorated team in AFCON history.
Thiaw began by acknowledging Egypt’s rich footballing heritage, emphasizing the respect he and his players hold for the multiple-time continental champions.
“This respect does not conflict with our confidence in our squad,” he said, highlighting the experience and skill within Senegal’s ranks.
According to the coach, his players possess the qualities necessary to compete at the highest level in the tournament, regardless of the opponent’s reputation or past achievements.
While he singled out Egypt’s star forwards Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush as exceptional talents, Cissé stressed that Senegal’s strategy is to confront the team as a whole rather than focusing on individual players.
“Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush are great and talented players, but our focus is on the entire Egyptian team, not just two players,” he said.
The Senegalese coach’s message combined respect with determination, making it clear that his team is prepared to advance.
“With all due respect to them, we are determined to win and secure our place in the final,” Thiaw declared, signaling the ambition of his side as they aim to replicate or surpass their previous AFCON successes.
Senegal and Egypt, two of Africa’s most storied footballing nations, are set to meet in a match that promises high intensity, tactical battles, and individual brilliance.
