Gustavo Lopes seeks new South Africa club after AmaZulu departure

Brazilian defender Gustavo Lopes has left AmaZulu after a brief spell and is now looking for another club in South Africa before the September transfer window closes.

The 26-year-old is expected to remain in the country while his representatives assess potential opportunities, according to information received by the Siya crew. A move to Gauteng is being considered, although it remains uncertain whether a suitable club will emerge for Lopes in the province.

Lopes joined AmaZulu in January 2026 after departing Clube Ferroviario da Beira in Mozambique, where he had spent two seasons. He had impressed during his time with the Mozambican club before earning a move to the PSL.

AmaZulu unveiled Lopes as a player capable of filling more than one role. He can play as a centre-back or as a defensive midfielder, giving him the flexibility to operate in either defence or midfield.

However, the Brazilian found it difficult to secure regular first-team football at Usuthu. His opportunities were limited during his time under coach Arthur Zwane, and he was unable to establish himself as a consistent member of the starting line-up.

His departure leaves Lopes and his representatives working to identify his next destination. Their priority is understood to be finding him another club in South Africa before the transfer window shuts in September.

Lopes is keen to continue his career in the country after experiencing top-flight football during his spell with AmaZulu. At 26, he is understood to view South Africa as the preferred setting for the next stage of his career.

The coming weeks will determine whether Lopes remains in the Betway Premiership or is forced to consider opportunities outside the country. His representatives are actively sounding out the market as they seek a new opportunity for the defender.

Lopes arrived at AmaZulu having built experience in Mozambique, but his short stay in South Africa has ended without him becoming a regular under Zwane. The next move will depend on whether interest develops in Gauteng or elsewhere before the September deadline.
