Former France international Bafétimbi Gomis has thrown his support behind Senegal ahead of their Africa Cup of Nations semi-final showdown against Egypt, following a visit to the Lions of Teranga camp in Morocco.
Taking to social media platform X, the ex-Lyon, Swansea City and Galatasaray striker revealed he met the Senegalese national team after a visit to FIFA’s offices in Rabat, Morocco.
Gomis praised the atmosphere within Pape Thiaw’s squad, describing a united group driven by strong leadership, ambition and collective spirit.
“Supported by over 18 million Senegalese, this team is experiencing the Africa Cup of Nations with exceptional energy and passion,” Gomis wrote.
“I saw a united and focused group, driven by demanding management and a true team spirit. All my best wishes to Senegal as they strive to achieve this goal and lift this major trophy.”
Gomis was welcomed by the Senegal FA delegation and the technical team, and held discussions with senior figures, experienced players and emerging talents, offering words of encouragement as the tournament reaches its decisive stage.
Born in France, the powerful striker was eligible to represent Senegal through his ancestry but opted to play for France at international level, earning 12 caps and scoring three goals.
Despite that choice, Gomis has maintained close ties with African football and has often spoken fondly of Senegal.
Senegal will face Egypt on Wednesday in a highly anticipated semi-final at the Ibn Batouta Stadium in Tanger.
The encounter is a repeat of recent high-stakes AFCON meetings between the two heavyweights, with the Teranga Lions hoping to edge closer to another continental title.
