Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet has voiced strong disappointment over CAF’s decision to alter the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) cycle.

Ahead of the 2025 tournament, CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe announced that AFCON would shift from its traditional two-year cycle to a four-year cycle, alongside the introduction of a Nations League.

From the 2028 edition, the continental showpiece will be staged every four years, a move aimed at aligning it with other major international tournaments such as the UEFA European Championship.

Speaking to the media before Mali’s second Group game against Morocco later today, Saintfiet did not hide his frustration, describing the decision as deeply unsettling.

“I’m shocked with it, very disappointed. It’s all instructed by the big people in UEFA, the big clubs from the five leagues, and also by FIFA, and that makes me so sad.

“I’m sad about that, and I hope the love for Africa would win out over the pressure of Europe.

Saintfiet further argued that the decision undermines Africa’s football identity and long-standing traditions.

“We fight so long to get respected in Africa, for African people and Africa’s own identity to get respected, but then to listen to Europe to change your history, a 68-year history, for financial reasons…I think we disrespect [Africa] by going to four years,” he added.

On the pitch, Mali began their AFCON campaign with a 1-1 draw against Zambia in their opening group match.
