Samuel Eto’o’s incredible AFCON scoring record in no danger
Former Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o could remain the all-time topscorer at the African Cup of Nations for a longer period, given his significant lead over his closest rivals, before the start of the Morocco edition on Sunday, December 21, 2025.
The former Barcelona and Chelsea star tops the list of highest goal scorers at the AFCON, racking up 18 goals across six different tournaments.
He is followed by the late Ivorian legend, Laurent Pokou, with 14 goals, and the late Nigerian, Rashidi Yekini, with 13 goals.
Egyptian legend Hassan El-Shazly occupies fourth place with 12 goals, while fifth place is shared with 11 goals each by Egyptian striker Hossam Hassan, the current coach of the Pharaohs, retired Ivorian star Didier Drogba, and Cameroonian legend Patrick Mboma.
Players to have scored 10 goals in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations include, the late Congolese player, Mulamba Ndaye, the Ghanaian Andre Ayew, who is not in his country’s current squad, along with the Ivorian Joel Tihi, the Tunisian Dos Santos, and the Zambian Kalusha Bwalya.
Eto’o’s record is in no danger as Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane, who are tipped to match are nowhere near the feat.
Salah has nine goals at the continental showpiece since making his debut, while Sadio Mane has seven goals, making it difficult for them to equal or surpass Eto’o’s record.
The 35th edition of the AFCON begins on Sunday, December 21, with Morocco expected to lock horns with Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
