It’s a huge responsibility- Wilfred Ndidi after being named Nigeria captain for AFCON 2025

Nigeria international Wilfred Ndidi has described the Super Eagles captaincy role as a huge responsibility heading into the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Ndidi, who plies his trade for Besiktas takes over  the captaincy role following the retirement of William Troost-Ekong.

And according to him, leading the Super Eagles at the tournament will require unity, cooperation, and collective effort from players and officials alike.

He emphasised that leadership within the national team is not about individual authority but about working together toward a shared goal. He stressed that success at AFCON 2025 will depend on strong communication, mutual understanding, and commitment from everyone involved.

“It’s a huge responsibility, with the help of the players everything will be smooth,” Ndidi told the Super Eagles media.

Ndidi revealed that he has already held discussions with several members of the squad to reinforce the importance of togetherness and clarity of purpose. According to the new captain, both players and coaching staff must remain aligned as preparations continue for the continental showpiece.

“I have had conversation with a couple of the players. Just to let them know the reason why we are. I also need their support as well. The staff as well, we are all in this together.

“We have conversation on the task ahead, and it is important for us to be together on the same page.”

As the Super Eagles prepare for AFCON 2025, Nigeria have been drawn into Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Nigeria will open their AFCON 2025 campaign against Tanzania on 23 December at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

They will then face Tunisia on 27 December before concluding the group stage against Uganda on 30 December.
