AFCON 2025: DR Congo eyes strong start against Senegal in Group D

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is preparing to make a statement at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, aiming to replicate its impressive 2023 performance and challenge Senegal in Group D.

Drawn alongside Senegal, Botswana, and Benin, the Leopards are determined to progress deep into the tournament.

Coach Sébastien Desabre emphasized that the team possesses the quality and ambition to go far, building on the momentum from their semi-final run in Ivory Coast two years ago.

After missing the 2021 AFCON finals in Cameroon, the DRC returned with a strong campaign in 2023, signaling a resurgence on the continental stage.

Key players such as Chancel Mbemba and Cédric Bakambu have reinforced the squad, while Desabre’s leadership has fostered stability and a clear vision for the team’s future.

The Leopards are also edging closer to qualifying for the World Cup, a stage they last reached in 1974.

Desabre is eager for a strong opening performance, beginning with the clash against Benin.

He believes a confident start is essential to set the tone for the tournament and build momentum before facing the Lions of Senegal.

“The goal is to show that what we did in Ivory Coast was not an isolated incident. The DRC is starting to assert itself at this level.

We have a team capable of going far and clear ambitions. This journey must be the beginning of something solid,” Desabre said.

The French coach stresses preparation as the key factor, noting that while the opening match against Benin will not determine everything, it remains critical for the team’s confidence and rhythm.

As the Leopards finalize their preparations in the final ten days before the tournament, expectations run high among players, staff, and supporters alike.

With a blend of experience and youthful energy, the DRC intends to leave a mark in Morocco, refusing to play the role of mere participants and aiming instead to challenge for continental glory.
