Kaizer Chiefs’ new tactics under Fernando Da Cruz earning praise as Amakhosi make strong start

Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika says the club’s squad has responded positively to Fernando Da Cruz’s tactical approach, with the Soweto club showing signs of significant progress at the beginning of the 2026-27 season.

Amakhosi have taken seven points from their opening three Betway Premiership matches, recording two victories and a draw. Their only setback in four games under Da Cruz came in the first round of the MTN8, where they suffered a surprise defeat by Lamontville Golden Arrows.

A draw with Premiership heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns has otherwise added to the impression that Chiefs are becoming a more organised and difficult team to beat. Da Cruz took charge after the departure of co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef.

Kwinika believes the team’s performances have demonstrated a clear change in both its structure and style.

“I think the team is coping well with the new coaches and the new season. I think we have proven in the games we play that it’s a different team; the style of play, the structure and how we do things,” Kwinika told the club’s media.

“So I think we have proven there is improvement, there are new tactics that are being placed and trying to get to a certain way of playing that we enjoy and we all understand in helping, and getting better as a team.”

The defender’s comments come as Chiefs prepare to face Richards Bay in their next league fixture. The match is scheduled for 19:30 tonight at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu, Durban.

Chiefs currently sit second in the Betway Premiership standings, seven points behind leaders Orlando Pirates, who have collected 10 points from four matches.

Victory over Richards Bay would not lift Amakhosi above Pirates because of the difference in games played and points, but it would strengthen their position in second place and keep them close to the top of the table.

The early-season form marks an encouraging start for Da Cruz, whose team has looked structurally solid across its four matches despite the MTN8 elimination. Chiefs’ organisation has helped them remain competitive against strong opposition, while the players continue adapting to the new coach’s methods.
