Real Madrid seek second win as Mourinho’s perfect league record against Real Sociedad comes under pressure

Real Madrid host Real Sociedad at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening, with Jose Mourinho aiming to guide his side to a second successive La Liga victory while preserving his unbeaten record against the Basque club.

The match is Real Madrid’s second league fixture of the 2026-27 season after their opening-day game was postponed. Mourinho’s new side began their campaign with a late 2-1 victory over Espanyol on Saturday.

According to Opta, Real Madrid have won their past six La Liga meetings with Real Sociedad. That is their best winning run against the club since February 2018, when they recorded seven consecutive league victories over them.

Real Sociedad have managed to take points in three of their past eight league visits to Real Madrid, recording one win and two draws alongside five defeats. That represents an improvement on their previous nine league trips to the Santiago Bernabeu, all of which ended in defeat.

A victory on Wednesday would also give Real Madrid wins in each of their opening two league matches for the fourth time in the past five seasons. They achieved that in 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2025-26, with 2024-25 the only season in that period in which they failed to do so.

Defensive concern for Mourinho

Despite their strong record against Real Sociedad, Real Madrid’s defensive form remains a concern. Since Mourinho took charge, the club have conceded at least once in each of their last eight La Liga matches, allowing 14 goals in total.

Opta records that as Real Madrid’s worst run without a clean sheet in the competition during the Portuguese manager’s tenure.

Real Sociedad arrive in Madrid after losing their opening match of the campaign 1-0 against Real Betis. Another defeat would see the San Sebastian club begin a season with two losses from their first two games for the first time since 2001-02, when they were managed by John Benjamin Toshack.

The visitors are also without a league win in their past nine matches, a sequence that includes five draws and four defeats. It is their longest run without victory in the competition since an 18-match spell between April and December 2006, when they drew eight and lost 10.

Mourinho, meanwhile, has never lost a La Liga match against Real Sociedad. In six previous meetings, his record stands at five wins and one draw.

The only opponent against whom Mourinho has gone through more league matches without defeat is Espanyol, against whom he recorded five wins and two draws in seven games. He has also avoided defeat in six matches against four other clubs.

Mbappe and Oyarzabal records

Kylian Mbappe has scored four goals in three La Liga appearances against Real Sociedad. He has scored more against only Villarreal, with five goals, while he has also found the net four times against Barcelona.

Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal has scored three goals in 19 league appearances against Real Madrid. All three have come from penalties, meaning Real Madrid are the opponent he has faced most often in the competition without scoring from open play.

The fixture therefore presents two contrasting challenges: Real Madrid are bidding to maintain their commanding head-to-head record and start the season with back-to-back wins, while Real Sociedad are trying to halt a nine-match winless run and avoid their first two-game losing start in 25 years.
