Egypt wants World Cup ‘Pride Match’ plans cancelled as Seattle organisers stand firm
Egypt’s football authorities have demanded the cancellation of planned LGBTQ+ celebrations around their 2026 World Cup match with Iran, escalating tension over the proposed “Pride Match” in Seattle.
The Egyptian FA disclosed that it has written to Fifa secretary-general Mattias Grafstrom to oppose the initiative in absolute terms, arguing the celebrations conflict with the cultural values of both Egypt and Iran.
The match is set for 26 June at Lumen Field, during Seattle Pride and two days before the Stonewall anniversary, prompting the local organising committee to schedule LGBTQ+ community programming.
The committee, however, insists it will proceed. It noted that the plans were designed before the World Cup draw and operate independently of Fifa.
A spokesperson said the group is “moving forward as planned with our community programming,” emphasising a commitment to offering visitors dignity and respect across the city.
The Egyptian FA’s statement argued that activities linked to LGBTQ+ support would clash with the “cultural, religious and social values” of both nations.
It cited Fifa’s neutrality statutes and urged that the match focus strictly on football. The letter stressed a need to avoid initiatives that could provoke sensitivities, while insisting that respect for diverse cultures should guide event planning.
Seattle officials clarified that the celebrations are city-based, not stadium-based, and will not form part of the matchday proceedings.
Hana Tedesse, vice-president of communications for Seattle Fifa World Cup 2026, said the committee’s role is to manage the city experience rather than dictate in-stadium activity.
She highlighted Seattle’s long-standing multicultural identity, including large Iranian-American and Egyptian communities.
Reports in Iranian media claim Tehran shares Cairo’s objections, though the BBC reports Iran has not lodged any formal complaint with Fifa.
Local criticism in Iran has described the Pride Match initiative as an irrational move supporting a particular group.
Seattle will host six matches in total, though switching fixtures may be difficult due to designations on other matchdays, including a Juneteenth commemoration. Fifa declined to comment when contacted.
