Marseille to delay release of Gabon star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after FIFA decision

French giants Olympique Marseille have confirmed the release date of Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The 35th edition of the continental showpiece has been scheduled between December 2025 and January 2026 in Morocco, with 24 countries set to battle it out for the covetous trophy.

Initially, clubs were mandated to release players for major tournaments 14 days before its commencement. Amid pressure from European clubs, the world football governing body (FIFA) has soften it stands, giving just seven days for the release of players.

The decision come as a refreshing news for Marseille, who will be counting on Aubameyang in their next two games against Monaco and Union St Gilloise.

Aubameyang was originally scheduled to join the Panthers camp on December 8. Upon FIFA decision, the French giants has decided to release the attacker for the AFCON tournament on December 15.

Speaking on RMC Sport the day before the announcement, OM sporting director Mehdi Benatia hinted that compromise was close.

“All clubs are working in the same direction to keep their internationals for as long as possible. I hope there will be common sense and that we can keep them until the 15th.”

The 36-year-old forward has made 81 appearances for the Gabon national team, scoring 39 goals across the period.
