Górnik Zabrze striker Ousmane Sow faced racist insults from sections of the Lechia Gdańsk crowd during Tuesday’s Polish Cup round-of-16 match, prompting strong support from teammate Lukas Podolski.

Lechia fans targeted the Senegalese forward several times throughout the match, which Górnik Zabrze won 3–1 at the PGE Arena Gdańsk.

Sow scored twice and celebrated with his teammates, but offensive chants from the home stands overshadowed the evening.

Supporters hurled racist slurs at Sow, particularly after his second goal.

The Górnik Zabrze spokesperson, Mateusz Antczak, confirmed on social media that the club immediately contacted the Polish Football Association’s disciplinary committee and demanded decisive sanctions.

The club leadership insisted on clear consequences for those responsible.

Sow did not respond publicly after the match, but his teammates rallied around him, with Podolski leading the way.

The former Germany international and World Cup winner condemned the abuse and voiced strong solidarity.

“Racism has no place in society, in sport, or in life,” Podolski wrote. “It must end now. We stand with you.”

Podolski’s message reached thousands of supporters online and drew widespread praise for its clarity and conviction.

Górnik Zabrze players also showed unity inside the dressing room, where Sow received full backing from the squad.

The match result strengthened Górnik’s impressive run in the competition, but the reaction inside the stadium sparked a national debate.

The club now awaits action from the Polish FA and urges football authorities to protect players from similar incidents.

Górnik Zabrze continues its Cup campaign with confidence on the pitch and a renewed call for accountability off it.
