English-Ghanaian midfielder Kobbie Mainoo will not be allowed to leave, says ex-Man United scout
Former Manchester United scout Mick Brown insists the club will block any attempt to move Kobbie Mainoo in January, stressing that United will not repeat past mistakes.
Brown’s view comes amid growing speculation linking the midfielder with a Serie A switch after a challenging domestic campaign.
Mainoo, who has Ghanaian heritage, has attracted sustained interest from Napoli, where Antonio Conte is pushing for a loan deal to ease an injury-hit midfield.
The Italian club have maintained contact with United since the summer, convinced the 19-year-old would thrive under Conte’s system.
Brown, however, believes the club’s stance is firm. “They know they made a mistake letting (Scott) McTominay leave.
“I was aghast at the fact they were even contemplating letting him go given the issues they had in midfield, and he’s done an incredible job since leaving. He’s gone away, knuckled down and become an absolute superstar for Napoli and for Scotland.
“But I think Man United have learned from the mistake of letting him go, and they’re going to take a different approach towards Kobbie Mainoo.”
Mainoo has struggled to secure regular minutes this season, which has fuelled uncertainty around his role under the current management. Napoli remain United’s most persistent suitor, viewing the midfielder as an ideal January reinforcement and ready to step up their efforts should United show any willingness to negotiate.
Despite this interest, Brown is adamant United will hold their position. “As far as the club are concerned, there are no plans to let him go,” he said, adding that the midfielder would likely flourish elsewhere.
Mainoo is considered a long-term asset, and United believe his potential remains significant despite recent difficulties.
