Malick Thiaw’s Germany call-up ends Senegal’s pursuit of the defender

Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw believes his side must produce a near-perfect display to secure a positive outcome against Olympique Marseille in their Champions League meeting tonight.

The centre-back expects an intense contest as Newcastle attempt to build on recent momentum in Europe.

Thiaw, whose father hails from Senegal, stressed that Marseille’s attacking options require full concentration throughout the match.

He said he was pleased with Newcastle’s previous European performance, adding: “I was really happy with the performance overall from the team, happy that we got these three points and that I did my job well as well.”

The defender acknowledged that facing elite forwards demands composure and precision.

“In general, I’m a really confident player but of course if you play against one of the best players – maybe the best striker right now in football – it can give you a little bit of extra motivation or confidence,” he noted.

Marseille’s frontline, led by Mason Greenwood, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Igor Paixão, has been one of Europe’s most aggressive this season.

Thiaw respects the balance within their attack and the understanding they share.

“I think all of these three players, they have big quality. They work well together, I think it’s a good mix of experience with Aubameyang and the young lads,” he said.

The defender also highlighted his familiarity with Paixão from previous meetings, describing him as a dangerous opponent.

Thiaw expects a charged atmosphere at Stade Vélodrome, a venue known for its intensity, and believes Newcastle must manage the environment wisely.

“Marseille is a really, really good team. The atmosphere will be great, that’s what we expect. Of course the atmosphere will be more on their side, so we have to be clever with it and try to be smart,” he remarked.

Newcastle enter the match seeking consistency as they navigate a challenging group phase.
