Brazilian-Cameroonian Vinicius Junior informs Real Madrid he will not renew contract under Alonso tension

Vinicius Junior has communicated to Real Madrid that he is unwilling to sign a contract extension while tensions with head coach Xabi Alonso persist.

The position was made known during a private discussion with club president Florentino Perez late last month, according to sources familiar with the meeting as reported by The Athletic.

His current deal expires in June 2027, and efforts to secure fresh terms have been unsuccessful since talks paused earlier this year.

The Brazil forward, who has Cameroonian heritage, raised the subject when he visited Perez to apologise for his conduct during the recent Clasico.

He reacted angrily after being replaced in the seventy second minute of the 2-1 win against Barcelona, leaving the pitch while shouting, “Always me, I’m leaving the team, it’s better if I leave, I’m leaving.”

Those close to Vinicius Junior insist the breakdown in his relationship with Alonso is central to his stance.

Tension has built since Madrid’s defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup semi-final on July 9, when Alonso initially planned to leave him out.

The winger started only because of an injury elsewhere, and on the right flank rather than his preferred left. This season, he has completed five of seventeen matches in all competitions, beginning on the bench four times.

Vinicius Junior apologised to teammates and issued a message on social media after the Barcelona incident, though he did not mention Alonso by name.

Individuals within the club interpreted the omission as deliberate, creating surprise among technical staff. Alonso has responded in repeated press conferences by stressing that rotation is required and that no personal disagreement exists.

Real Madrid offered a renewal earlier this year with a salary increase to around twenty million euros net per season.

When that was declined, the player’s representatives requested a historic package near thirty million euros, including bonuses that would match the club’s record levels. Negotiations have since halted, with the strained relationship viewed internally as an obstacle to progress.

Madrid’s communications department denied the meeting with Perez when asked to comment, although senior figures privately acknowledge the concerns.

Perez has long shown support for Vinicius Junior, and club officials hope strong performances will ease the situation.
