Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris ruled out any attempt to rush Habib Diarra back from injury, placing the midfielder’s Africa Cup of Nations hopes in serious doubt.

The Senegal international continues to recover from a groin issue that required surgery on 23 September.

He now faces a tight and uncertain race to return before the tournament.

Diarra missed Senegal’s last two squad gatherings, and his condition still raises concerns.

Le Bris addressed the situation on Thursday and stated that the club intends to protect the 21-year-old at all costs.

He said the midfielder will follow a strict rehabilitation plan without pressure to accelerate his return.

The manager stressed that Sunderland cannot risk the player’s long-term fitness.

The former Racing Club de Strasbourg captain, who holds 13 caps and four goals for Senegal, still hopes to feature in the Tyne and Wear derby against Newcastle on 14 December.

He understands that regular minutes will strengthen his case for selection by national coach Pape Thiaw.

However, the possibility of Diarra missing training until the start of preseason creates more uncertainty around his availability.

Le Bris delivered a clear message to Senegal regarding Diarra.

He said the club wants the midfielder in top condition for the second half of the season and will not compromise his health for an early return.

He explained that the player progresses well but still needs time before he reaches full intensity.

Diarra remains hopeful but knows his chances grow slimmer as the tournament approaches.

Pape Thiaw values him highly, yet he may avoid selecting a player still short of full fitness.

The national team already deals with several selection concerns, and taking risks could affect Senegal’s preparation.

Forward Assane Diao faces a similar situation as he continues to manage his own recovery.

Both players now wait for medical updates as the AFCON countdown accelerates.
