Fiery reactions and major disputes follow Hossam Hassan’s post-match statements
A storm erupted after Egypt coach Hossam Hassan’s fiery post-match remarks during the Al Ain Cup.
Brazilian coach Rogerio Micale, Egypt’s former Olympic boss, issued a statement highlighting his track record and stressing that “competence, not nationality, is what matters”, a direct response to Hassan, who referenced salaries and foreign coaches. Micale reflected on achieving an Olympic medal with Brazil and developing strong players in Egypt and Saudi Arabia, considering even the mention of his name as “a form of respect.”
Meanwhile, Hassan’s statements deeply upset striker Mostafa Mohamed, who felt belittled. Rather than responding publicly, Mostafa sent a message to the Egyptian FA president, expressing his disappointment, especially as AFCON approaches. The national team staff issued a statement clarifying Hassan’s comments were about Mostafa’s limited playtime at Nantes, not his abilities.
Hassan used the press conference to defend his choices, citing player fatigue and defending Egypt’s homegrown coaches. He also addressed criticism for switching goalkeepers before the penalty shootout, stressing his goal was to protect the team’s interests before AFCON.
