2026 World Cup Play-off: Nigeria VS DR Congo starting lineups

Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo have confirmed their starting lineups ahead of their decisive meeting in the African zone play-off final for a place at the 2026 World Cup.

With only one match separating both nations from qualification, the two coaches have opted for bold selections as they attempt to secure the coveted ticket to North America.

For Nigeria, the Super Eagles’ technical team has made two significant adjustments to the side that featured in the semi-final victory over Gabon.

Adam Akor and Bright Osayi-Samuel, both starters in the previous match, begin this encounter on the bench.

In their place, Frank Onyeka and Semi Ajayi have been brought into the starting XI, reflecting a shift designed to add stability in midfield and greater balance in defence.

The rest of the lineup remains unchanged, with Stanley Nwabali once again trusted in goal and Victor Osimhen leading the attack.

Nigeria’s set-up suggests a plan built on physical intensity, quick transitions, and the creativity of Alex Iwobi to link midfield and attack.

With in-form wingers Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze flanking Osimhen, the Super Eagles will rely on pace and direct play to unsettle the Congolese back line.

On the opposite side, DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre has opted for continuity, naming a starting team that reflects the solid core which carried the Leopards through the earlier rounds.

The Congolese lineup features a blend of power, technique, and experience, with Chancel Mbemba anchoring the defence and Cédric Bakambu spearheading the attack.

The selection also highlights the versatility within the Congolese squad, with Axel Tuanzebe and Arthur Masuaku complementing a defence known for its ability to withstand high pressing.

In midfield, Samuel Moutoussamy and Charles Pickel Mukau provide structure and control, while Yoane Wissa and Théo Bongonda Elia offer the attacking spark capable of troubling Nigeria’s back line.

Both sides enter the match with identical ambitions but contrasting styles.

Nigeria rely on explosive attacking options and the goalscoring prowess of Osimhen, while DR Congo’s strength lies in their collective cohesion and tactical discipline under Desabre’s guidance.

With a World Cup spot at stake, the tension is expected to be high, and the margin for error minimal.

The stage is set for one of African football’s most significant battles of the year — a matchup where every duel, pass, and decision could shape the fate of a nation’s World Cup dream.
