Swedish-Eritrean striker Alexander Isak opens up on sloppy start to Liverpool career
Sweden international of Eritrean descent Alexander Isak has broken his silence following the worst possible start to his Liverpool career, having scored just one goal since his controversial £130 million move on the final day of the summer transfer window.
Isak forced a move away from Newcastle United in the summer window and has since not settled at Liverpool.
Amid his declining performance and recurring injuries, Isak admitted that the past few weeks have not been as he had hoped, stressing that he is not looking for excuses, despite the difficult circumstances he has gone through.
“When I’m on the pitch, I don’t allow myself any excuses. I always want to play my way and deliver the performance required. It’s difficult to be away and unable to help, but I’m back now, and I’m optimistic.”
Isak had come on as a substitute, after recovering from a thigh injury, during Sweden’s 4-1 loss to Switzerland on Saturday, but was unable to register a single shot on target.
The forward has been out of action since October 22 due to injury and is still not ready to start matches.
The Swedish striker was unable to make a strong start with Liverpool, after spending most of the summer training alone, in order to put pressure on the Newcastle management to allow him to move to Anfield.
His only goal so far came against Southampton, bottom of the Championship, in the Carabao Cup, although he remains confident in his ability to turn things around.
“Nothing is easy in football. With experience you learn to deal with things, whether it’s injuries or not. You learn how to get back on track. An injury is always frustrating, whether it’s one game or more. It’s always the worst for the player himself.”
