Kenya’s missed chances cost them as Equatorial Guinea strike late in Antalya
Kenya’s Harambee Stars began their November international break with a 1-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea at the Emir Complex Stadium in Antalya, Turkey, on Friday. Despite dominating early, Kenya conceded a late first-half penalty that proved decisive.
The goal came two minutes before halftime after a defensive error by Gor Mahia’s defender, who fouled Equatorial Guinea forward Josete Miranda in the box.
The 27-year-old, playing for Kalamata in Greece’s Super League 2, converted the spot-kick past goalkeeper Bryne Omondi to give the Nzalang Nacional the lead.
Kenya had earlier threatened in the 13th minute when Jonah Ayunga found space in the area but shot straight at Equatorial Guinea keeper Jesús Owono.
Five minutes later, Ayunga lobbed the ball over Owono, only for the effort to be ruled offside.
Harambee Stars continued pressing, creating further chances. In the 30th minute, Kevin Otiende combined with Boniface Muchiri, but his shot went wide.
Ayunga then missed a one-on-one opportunity after a precise setup from Sylvester Owino, failing to find the net.
Equatorial Guinea started the second half strongly. Pablo Garnet saw a shot cleared off the line, forcing Kenya coach Benni McCarthy to make tactical changes.
Austin Odhiambo and Ovella Ochieng replaced William Lenkupae and Muchiri, while Alphonce Omija and Sharrif Musa came on for Michael Kibwage and Ryan Ogam.
Kenya nearly equalised in the 78th minute when Odhiambo connected with Rooney Onyango’s pass but failed to convert. Despite several attacking opportunities, Harambee Stars could not break the deadlock.
A positive from the match was the senior team debut of youngster Aldrine Kibet, who impressed during his minutes on the pitch.
Harambee Stars will next face Senegal on November 18 at the Mardan Sports Complex.
The friendly follows their recent 2026 World Cup qualifiers, in which Kenya defeated Burundi 1-0 away but suffered a 3-0 loss to Ivory Coast.
The defeat highlighted missed chances and defensive lapses, giving McCarthy lessons as he prepares for upcoming competitive fixtures.
