Egypt U-17 coach Ahmed El-Kass embraces challenge against Switzerland
Ahmed El-Kass, head coach of Egypt’s U-17 national team, spoke with determination ahead of the team’s pivotal clash against Switzerland in the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
El-Kass stressed that the goal is not just to go far in the tournament but to nurture a new generation of Egyptian athletes, teaching values on and off the field. “It’s a tough match, no doubt, Switzerland has proven to be one of the best,” he explained. “We’ll do our best and hope luck is on our side to go even further.”
El-Kass expressed pride in his players and hoped they would soon feature with their clubs’ first teams. Egypt earned its spot in the knockouts as one of the top eight third-placed teams, following a win against Haiti, a draw with Venezuela, and a loss to England. Switzerland enters strong, having topped Group F.
“This is our first time in 28 years at the U-17 World Cup,” El-Kass noted. “We wanted to show the world a new face for Egyptian football.” He recounted the difficult journey to qualify, describing the ups and downs the team faced. He humorously mentioned his desire for the squad to avenge his own loss as a player against England in 1990, but the “curse” persisted.
He added, “My job is to build character beyond the pitch. These young men should understand the meaning of sport and competition, and appreciate the fans supporting them.” El-Kass praised the passionate Egyptian crowd in Qatar, saying their support makes all the difference for young players whose names are still new to fans.
Egypt continues its legacy in youth tournaments, hoping to match or even surpass past successes as they look to build a brighter football future.
