Trevoh Chalobah has opened up about the moment he was told he had no future at Chelsea, describing how he turned that setback into motivation to reclaim his place in the squad.

The defender, once considered surplus to requirements, has re-established himself as a key figure under manager Enzo Maresca following a successful loan spell.

Born in Freetown to Sierra Leonean parents before moving to England as a child, Chalobah has long been admired for his composure, versatility, and tactical awareness.

His story is one of perseverance within one of Europe’s most demanding football environments.

“At that time, obviously, I was told I wasn’t going to be part of the plans,” Chalobah said, recalling last season’s uncertainty.

“But you can’t dwell on things and sulk. I took it in a positive way and went back and got my games at Palace.”

The 26-year-old returned to Stamford Bridge in January after his stint with Crystal Palace and immediately impressed Maresca with his discipline and maturity.

His performances have since earned him a regular starting place, restoring faith among fans who once feared his Chelsea journey had ended.

“In life you have two choices: let it affect you or take what’s in front of you,” he explained.

“I went on loan, kept my head down. I always knew I wanted to stay but some things were out of your control.”

Chalobah insisted his comeback was never about proving doubters wrong but about reaffirming his quality for the team.

“For me, I didn’t feel I needed to prove anything. I had been at Chelsea, played already two seasons before that and showed my level.”

Now firmly part of Maresca’s defensive setup, Chalobah hopes his resurgence can inspire others facing similar challenges.

“I just kept working on my game and managed to bring myself back. Hopefully this season, we can do it again.”
