French-Guinean midfielder Paul Pogba all smiles as he returns to Monaco training, says Pocognoli
Paul Pogba was ‘smiling and having fun’ as he rejoined AS Monaco’s first-team training, according to the club’s head coach, Sébastien Pocognoli.
The French-Guinean midfielder, who has been sidelined for nearly two years due to a doping suspension, signed for Monaco during the summer in a bid to revive his career.
His highly anticipated return was delayed earlier this month after he sustained a minor muscle strain during training.
Now back with the group, Pocognoli described Pogba’s latest step as a significant boost for both the player and the team.
“The path for Paul Pogba is to proceed step by step. Yesterday he trained with the group for the first time since I arrived,” the Monaco coach told reporters.
“He was smiling, having fun, interacting with the other players. This is the first stage.”
The 32-year-old former Juventus and Manchester United star has endured a turbulent few years marked by injuries, disciplinary issues, and suspension.
Yet his presence continues to command respect within the dressing room, where teammates reportedly view his return as a morale lift.
Pocognoli urged patience, emphasizing that Pogba’s recovery process must be handled carefully.
“It could last a few days, two or three weeks, and then we can build on that to build performances and consistency,” he added.
“That’s the situation, and I’m happy to see him on the pitch.”
Monaco, who sit in the top half of Ligue 1, are hopeful that Pogba’s gradual reintegration will add experience and leadership to a young squad pushing for European qualification.
While a competitive comeback date has not been confirmed, sources within the club say Pogba’s attitude and energy in training have impressed staff—clear signs that the former World Cup winner is determined to write a new chapter in his storied career.
