Belgian-Guinean forward Malick Fofana continues to attract praise for his rapid development and fearless playing style.
Former Belgium striker Nordin Jbari believes Fofana’s transfer to Lyon was the perfect step for the 20-year-old of Guinean descent.
Speaking to Africasoccer, Jbari, now an RTBF pundit, shared his admiration for the young winger’s potential and character.
Jbari described Fofana as one of the brightest prospects in Belgian football. He praised the Lyon forward’s energy, pace, and confidence on the ball.
“He’s lively, fast, and spontaneous. He brings freshness and unpredictability to his game,” said Jbari.
“Technically, he’s sharp and adds a touch of creativity that’s rare for his age.”
The former Club Brugge and La Gantoise striker highlighted Fofana’s humility, saying his quiet personality allows his football to speak for itself.
“He stays grounded and focused,” Jbari noted. “He still needs to improve in front of goal, but his growth is steady and promising.”
Fofana joined Lyon in January 2024 for €17 million after emerging at Gent. Jbari said the move was a calculated and wise choice.
“Lyon might not dominate French football like before, but it remains a big club with excellent facilities,” he said.
“He’s getting regular minutes, maturing fast, and learning in a competitive environment. That’s what he needs now.”
The Belgian analyst also praised Lyon’s strategy of building a youthful squad guided by experienced players such as Nicolás Tagliafico, Moussa Niakhaté, Corentin Tolisso, and Rachid Ghezzal.
“The mix works,” said Jbari. “Fofana fits perfectly into that structure, and the results show Lyon are improving.”
Jbari confirmed Everton’s interest in Fofana during the last transfer window but insisted staying in France was the right call.
“He’s still young. Leaving mid-season for England before the World Cup wouldn’t make sense,” he said. “He’ll have time to move later, especially if he shines with Belgium.”
On his international prospects, Jbari acknowledged that Belgium coach Rudi Garcia has yet to make Fofana a regular starter.
However, he believes that could soon change. “Fofana and Jérémy Doku could form a devastating wing partnership,” he explained. “They’re both fast, daring, and capable of breaking defences apart.”
Jbari concluded that staying at Lyon until at least 2027 could benefit both Fofana and the club.
“If he keeps progressing, bigger clubs will come,” he said. “But for now, Lyon is the perfect place for his growth.”
