Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye made his long-awaited return to competitive football on Monday, featuring in Udinese’s 1-1 Serie A draw against Cremonese at the Stadio Giovanni Zini.

Okoye had been sidelined for two months after receiving a suspension for fair play infringements, despite being cleared of any betting-related wrongdoing following a lengthy investigation last season.

The Nigerian international’s return got off to a shaky start, as he conceded just four minutes into the match from a Filippo Terracciano header. Despite the early setback, Udinese responded well, with Nicolo Zaniolo scoring the equaliser six minutes after the restart.

Throughout the game, Cremonese dominated possession and created more chances, keeping Okoye busy between the posts. He registered two saves, one high claim, and recorded a 76% pass completion rate.

However, his positioning for the goal conceded raised questions, as he was unable to react quickly to a close-range header that was directed straight at him.

There were additional moments of uncertainty, including a misjudged cross in the first half that nearly resulted in another goal.

Nonetheless, Okoye redeemed himself with a crucial one-on-one save against Jamie Vardy in the 58th minute, showcasing his reflexes and shot-stopping ability.

Considering he had been out of competitive action for over five months, Okoye’s performance was considered a solid return.

He will now look to build on this outing and regain full match sharpness in the coming weeks as Udinese continue their Serie A campaign.
