Pep Guardiola sees great future for Ryan Cherki at Manchester City
Ahead of Manchester City’s Champions League tie against Villarreal, head coach Pep Guardiola has singled out Algerian winger Ryan Cherki as an extraordinary talent.
Cherki has just returned from injury and played five minutes against Everton in City’s most recent Premier League match, earning a place in the squad traveling to Spain.
Guardiola lavishly praised his young prodigy, saying, “Cherki is one of the huge talents I’ve ever seen in my career; technically, individually he’s top!” The City manager spoke about the challenge of helping Cherki fit into City’s tactical framework, stating that progress has begun since the Club World Cup, though time is needed given Cherki’s limited action after injury.
Guardiola added, “The feeling is that most of the times, not all the time, the ball comes to him, the situation is better. But not all the time he has to play making exceptional things. He has to play just football.” Highlighting Cherki’s recent assist and confidence, Guardiola noted, “He always wants to play with the ball, like a street player, ‘Give me the ball, give me the ball!’ But it’s a short time here, and he needs a little bit of time.”
The upcoming Villarreal match provides another opportunity for Cherki to showcase his skills under the guidance of a mentor who believes in his limitless potential
