Stalemate in Tripoli keeps Al-Masry’s African dreams alive

Fans witnessed a tense showdown as Al-Masry from Port Said held Libyan side Al-Ittihad to a goalless draw in Tripoli for the African Confederation Cup.

Both teams battled on the pitch with Al-Masry, led by Tunisian coach Nabil Kouki, prioritizing defense and shutting down several threatening attempts from the Libyans, who played in front of a lively home crowd. The hosts came close to scoring when Mohamed Zarida’s header struck the post, while Al-Masry’s goalkeeper, Mahmoud Hamdy, put in a strong performance to keep his side in the game.

Al-Masry started the second half with more determination, especially after left-back Amr Saadawy pushed forward and tested the defense. As fatigue set in, Mido Gaber came on as a substitute and created a notable chance, though the breakthrough remained elusive. The stubborn defense and some missed Libyan opportunities meant the match ended goalless, but both sets of players seemed satisfied with the result.

Al-Masry is gearing up to host Al-Ittihad in Suez on October 25 for the return leg, hoping to secure a spot in the group stage. In recent years, Al-Masry has become a familiar contender in the tournament, notably reaching the semi-finals in 2018 and consistently performing against big teams from across the continent, with Egyptian clubs like Zamalek and Al Ahly boasting Confederation Cup victories. The journey is far from over, as the return match promises more excitement for both fans and players alike.
