Shearer says Swedish-Eritrean striker Alexander Isak’s Liverpool move hasn’t worked
Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has delivered a blunt assessment of Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool, declaring that the transfer ‘hasn’t worked.’
The former Premier League top scorer believes the Swedish forward has struggled to justify his switch to Anfield after forcing a late summer move from St. James’ Park.
Born in Sweden to Eritrean parents, Isak was one of the most talked-about strikers in Europe last season before his controversial transfer.
His decision to skip Newcastle’s pre-season to engineer a move to Liverpool drew criticism, and Shearer now suggests the 25-year-old’s form has been affected by that turbulent summer.
“It hasn’t been the start to the season that Isak would’ve wanted,” Shearer told Betfair.
“Obviously, with the Newcastle situation — Isak not playing or training — he understandably hasn’t hit the ground running at Liverpool.
“He was probably looking to get to full fitness at this international break, but it’s gone the other way.”
Shearer also pointed to Isak’s poor form for the Swedish national team, noting that the talented front three of Viktor Gyökeres, Isak, and Anthony Elanga have failed to deliver during World Cup qualifying.
“It hasn’t worked — he and they haven’t scored and can’t score which, when you look at the ability of that front three, being bottom of the group doesn’t look right at all,” Shearer added.
The Premier League great suggested that the timing and circumstances of Isak’s move disrupted both his fitness and rhythm, factors that have compounded his early struggles on Merseyside.
“The summer certainly hasn’t helped Isak,” Shearer concluded, implying that the striker’s unsettled start could continue unless he quickly rediscovers confidence and sharpness in front of goal.
