Xavi Hernández tips Morocco as potential surprise package at 2026 World Cup
Former Barcelona captain and manager Xavi Hernández believes Morocco could once again be one of the standout teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, hinting that the Atlas Lions are capable of causing another major upset on football’s grandest stage.
The Spanish legend shared his views during a promotional event for the official 2026 World Cup match ball, where he was invited to give his early predictions for the tournament. When asked which team might emerge as a surprise contender, Xavi said:
“It’s difficult, but maybe Belgium or Croatia, although it wouldn’t really be a surprise. Or Morocco, again.”
His remarks reflect the growing respect Morocco has earned since their historic 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar, where they became the first African nation to reach the semi-finals after defeating Spain and Portugal along the way.
Spain Among Favourites
Xavi, who lifted the World Cup with Spain in 2010, also backed his home country to challenge for the title, despite their early exit in Qatar. La Roja were eliminated in the round of 16 after losing to Morocco on penalties—a defeat that marked one of the biggest shocks of that tournament.
“Spain has everything to go far,” he noted, expressing confidence that the blend of young talent and experienced players could make Luis de la Fuente’s side serious contenders.
The former midfielder, renowned for his tactical acumen and deep understanding of the game, remains optimistic about the new generation of Spanish stars who are expected to shine in North America next year.
Praise for Yamal and Pedri
Xavi also shared his hopes for individual brilliance at the 2026 edition, naming two of Barcelona’s brightest prospects among his personal favourites for the tournament’s best player award.
“I would love to see Lamine Yamal crowned best player of the tournament,” he said, adding that “Pedri is also among the big favourites for this distinction.”
Both players have been central to Spain’s recent resurgence, with Yamal—still a teenager—widely regarded as one of the most exciting talents in world football, while Pedri continues to anchor Barcelona’s midfield with composure beyond his years.
As anticipation builds for the expanded 2026 World Cup across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Xavi’s words echo a sentiment shared by many fans: Morocco’s rise is no longer a fairytale—it’s a reality that could yet shape football’s next great story.
