Steve Mounié equals Benin’s All-Time scoring record with the Cheetahs

The captain of Benin, Steve Mounie, has indicated that every player in camp is ready to give everything to ensure they beat Nigeria on Tuesday to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Cheetahs, guided by former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, are set for a tense showdown with Nigeria at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday. The fixture carries massive stakes, with Benin standing on the brink of history.

Fresh from a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, Benin moved to the summit of Group C with 17 points from nine matches. That victory brought them within touching distance of their first-ever World Cup appearance.

A draw against Nigeria would seal their place at the global showpiece, though they could still qualify even in defeat if South Africa drops points against Rwanda in the group’s other final fixture.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Mounie emphasised the importance of the moment and the team’s determination to rise to the occasion.

“We play football for this kind of match. It will be a historic meeting. We will give everything to take Benin to the World Cup,” the forward declared passionately.

Nigeria, sitting just behind Benin in the standings, will also approach the game with urgency, knowing that anything short of victory could end their qualification hopes. Backed by their home fans in Uyo, the Super Eagles are expected to throw everything forward in search of a win.

As the countdown continues, anticipation is building across Africa for what promises to be a thrilling, emotionally charged West African battle, one that could etch a new chapter in Benin’s football history.
