Leeds United consider move for DR Congo goalkeeper Matthieu Epolo

Leeds United are considering a move for DR Congo goalkeeper Matthieu Epolo as the Premier League club assess options for their second-choice goalkeeper.

The 21-year-old Standard Liège goalkeeper is reportedly available for around €8m and has emerged as a leading option if Leeds decide to recruit a young prospect rather than an experienced goalkeeper.

French side Marseille remain interested in Epolo, although their pursuit appears to have cooled in recent days.

Leeds weigh up goalkeeper options

Leeds are currently deciding whether to strengthen their goalkeeping department with experience or invest in a younger player.

Should the Premier League club opt for the latter approach, Epolo is reportedly at the top of their list.

The goalkeeper recently represented DR Congo at the FIFA World Cup, adding major international experience to his young career.

Marseille interest loses momentum

Marseille had previously been keen to sign Epolo but have now opted to retain Dutch goalkeeper Jeffrey De Lange.

De Lange started against Strasbourg and, although he may not remain Marseille’s first-choice goalkeeper for the entire season, the club have decided to keep him.

The Dutchman had been viewed as a potential part-exchange option in a deal that could have taken Epolo to the Vélodrome.

As a result, Marseille’s interest in the DR Congo international has reportedly diminished, leaving Leeds with an opportunity to explore a potential deal.

Toulouse option ruled out

Epolo had also been considered by Toulouse as a possible replacement should goalkeeper Guillaume Restes leave the club.

However, GFFN reports that the France youth international is expected to remain with Toulouse at least until the winter transfer window.

That development has further strengthened Leeds’ position in the race for Epolo, although any move will depend on whether the English club decide to pursue the Standard Liège goalkeeper and meet his reported €8m valuation.
