Al Ahly fights back to claim Cairo derby glory over Zamalek
Al Ahly showed their spirit in the Cairo derby, rallying late to defeat rivals Zamalek 2-1 at Cairo Stadium in the Egyptian Premier League.
The Reds looked under pressure for much of the contest but found their breakthrough through the impact of substitute Hussein El Shahat.
Zamalek went ahead in the 32nd minute when Hossam Abdel-Maguid converted from the spot after a retaken penalty. Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy had saved the first attempt by Abdallah El-Said, but the referee ordered it to be replayed.
The game turned in the final twenty minutes. El Shahat equalized in the 71st minute, calmly slotting home after linking up with Mohamed Sherif. Just minutes later, he earned a penalty after drawing a foul from Mahmoud Bentayg. Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet stepped up and buried the kick in the 78th minute, sending the Red Devils’ fans wild.
Interim coach Emad El-Nahhas saw his side climb to third on 15 points, while Yannick Ferreira’s Zamalek remain top on 17.
The Cairo derby once again lived up to its fierce reputation.
