FC Servette set to part ways with Cameroonian midfielder Gaël Ondoua
FC Servette have decided not to renew the contract of Cameroonian international Gaël Ondoua, bringing his time at the Swiss club to an imminent close.
Ondoua, who joined Servette in 2023, is now playing his final months in the club’s colours. His deal will not be extended, with the management also signalling a willingness to sanction a transfer as early as the winter window.
The midfielder’s impact during his spell in Geneva has been significant. Upon his arrival, Ondoua quickly established himself as a central figure in the squad, featuring prominently in their domestic campaign and helping the side clinch the 2024 Swiss Cup.
Across his tenure, he has made 145 appearances in all competitions, a testament to both his consistency and durability in midfield.
Yet this season has marked a turning point in his standing within the squad. Once considered indispensable, the 29-year-old has seen his role diminished, with more of his appearances coming from the bench. Despite this reduced playing time, Ondoua continues to be regarded highly by his teammates, maintaining influence in the dressing room even as his on-field contributions have lessened.
Interest in the Yaoundé-born player remains strong. Several clubs are monitoring his situation, drawn by his experience and proven pedigree at both domestic and international levels.
Having been schooled in Russian football, Ondoua previously represented CSKA Moscow and Anzhi Makhachkala before moving to Switzerland.
Unsurprisingly, Russian clubs are among those keen on securing his services, alongside sides from Denmark who have also entered the frame.
With a market valuation of €500,000, according to Transfermarkt, Ondoua represents an affordable and seasoned option for prospective suitors.
For the player himself, the next step is seen as a chance to revive his career and prove his qualities remain intact at the highest level.
The decision from Servette to part ways reflects the changing dynamics within the squad as they look towards the future.
While Ondoua’s contributions, particularly in their cup-winning campaign, will be remembered fondly, the club is preparing to move on without him at the core of their plans.
For Ondoua, the coming months carry a mix of challenge and opportunity. Whether his next chapter unfolds in Russia, Denmark, or another destination, the midfielder will be determined to demonstrate that he still possesses the ability to influence games and lead from the centre of the pitch.
As his time in Geneva draws to a close, the legacy of Gaël Ondoua at Servette will be defined by both his consistency across nearly 150 appearances and his role in securing silverware. What remains now is the question of where his next challenge will take him, with his departure from Switzerland all but confirmed.
