Record prize money sets stage for thrilling FKF Premier League 2025/26 kickoff on Friday
The 2025/26 Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League kicks off on Friday, September 19, with a record financial package designed to raise the competitiveness of the country’s top-flight.
FKF, in partnership with title sponsor SportPesa, confirmed that prize money for the champions has tripled from Ksh5 million to Ksh15 million under the new deal.
In total, Ksh20 million has been earmarked for top finishers, with the runners-up set to collect Ksh3 million and the third-placed team Ksh2 million.
In addition, 60% of the league’s Ksh2 billion funding will go directly to clubs — amounting to Ksh1.2 billion — while Ksh800 million will be channelled into operations and development programmes across the competition.
Big names line up for season opener
Six matches headline the first weekend of action. Tusker, who finished fourth last season, will launch the campaign against KCB at Nyayo Stadium on Friday.
Kenya Police FC, the reigning champions, have had their opener against Mara Sugar postponed to allow their participation in the CAF Champions League, where they meet Mogadishu City Club in a preliminary round tie on Saturday.
On Saturday, Kariobangi Sharks clash with Bandari FC, while AFC Leopards — under new management — battle Sofapaka. Sunday’s fixtures see Shabana FC host newly promoted APS Bomet at Gusii Stadium, Murang’a Seal take on Ulinzi Stars at the SportPesa Arena, and record champions Gor Mahia under Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor open against Bidco United.
Coaches outline ambitions ahead of new season
Gor Mahia boss Charles Akonnor has declared his intention to “bring back that glory” after losing the crown to Police FC last term.
Tusker’s Charles Okere expressed satisfaction with his side’s pre-season in Kisumu, saying: “We gave them more minutes to see them applying what we have learnt under pressure. This camp was a plus for us.”
AFC Leopards coach Fred Ambani rallied supporters, stating: “I can only ask our fans to wait for the title this season. We are ready to fight and bring it home.” Shabana’s Peter Okidi added: “Last time we came close, this time we want to take it.”
Selected FKF Premier League matches will be streamed live on Azam TV and FKF’s social media pages.
