Five names dream of leading Al Ahly after Mahmoud El Khatib steps aside
The upcoming Al Ahly elections at the end of the year will be unlike any in recent memory.
With Mahmoud El Khatib stepping away from the sporting scene, five figures are preparing to chase their dream of becoming the new president of Egypt’s most popular club.
Businessman Yassin Mansour is seen as a strong contender. A loyal supporter of the Red Castle, he once headed the club’s football company and has the resources to reshape its financial standing.
Former president Mahmoud Taher is also in the picture. Between 2014 and 2017, he guided the team to continental and local titles and has vast administrative experience that could serve the club well again.
Taher Abu Zeid, an Al Ahly legend from the 1980s, brings both star power and political experience as a former Minister of Sports.
Hossam Ghaly, a fan favorite and current board member, has made his intention to run public, while Khaled Mortagy, the club’s treasurer and acting vice president, enters with years of administrative background.
Al Ahly fans now wait to see which path their beloved club will take.
