Guinean forward Salifou Soumah chooses Malmö FF to advance his career
Salifou Soumah has described his move to Malmö FF as a decisive step in his career, insisting the Swedish club offered the best environment for his development despite receiving more lucrative proposals elsewhere.
The 22-year-old Guinean winger, who impressed last season with Zira FK in Azerbaijan, was courted by several European sides during the summer transfer window but opted for Malmö’s sporting project over financial incentives.
Speaking to Africafoot, Soumah stressed that the decision was made with long-term progress in mind rather than short-term gain.
“Malmö seemed the best choice”
“It means a lot to me. Signing for Malmö FF is an important step in my career and a recognition of what I achieved in Azerbaijan,” Soumah explained.
“It is even greater than what I experienced at Le Havre AC. Other offers existed, but Malmö seemed like the best choice for me to continue my development.”
For Soumah, the decision was influenced heavily by Malmö’s pedigree. The Swedish champions are among Scandinavia’s most decorated clubs and enjoy regular exposure in European competitions.
The prospect of playing at that level convinced the winger that Malmö would provide the right platform to test himself against stronger opposition.
“I wanted a new challenge in a major league. Malmö is a historic club, one of the biggest in Sweden, and it competes in European tournaments,” he said.
“That weighed a lot in my choice. It was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.”
Breakthrough season in Azerbaijan
Soumah’s stock rose significantly during his stint with Zira FK, where he registered 12 goals in 34 matches across all competitions.
That campaign not only boosted his reputation but also helped him rediscover the confidence that had eluded him in earlier stages of his career.
“In Azerbaijan, I made a lot of progress, both as a player and as a person,” he reflected. “That experience allowed me to take an important step forward and better prepare myself for new challenges.”
His form at Zira also opened the door to international football, with Soumah earning his first senior cap for Guinea during that period.
A new chapter in Sweden
Since arriving in Malmö, the player known by the nickname Bombé has settled quickly into his new environment. While adjusting to Swedish football presents its own challenges, Soumah insists he is focused on adapting and proving himself worthy of a starting role.
“First, I want to establish myself here in Malmö, help the club achieve its goals and win trophies. For now, that’s my priority,” he stated.
His arrival has been welcomed by Malmö fans who see him as an exciting addition capable of adding flair and pace to their attack.
For Soumah, the task is now to repay that faith with performances that confirm why the club invested in him.
Looking ahead
With ambition to grow further, Soumah has made clear that this transfer is not just about the present but also about laying the foundations for greater achievements.
While his immediate goal is success with Malmö, he has not hidden his desire to reach the very top of European football.
For now, though, his focus remains on Sweden. “I’ve reached a major milestone by joining Malmö,” Soumah concluded.
“The next step is to keep working hard, help the club, and show that I can make a real impact here.”
