Cameroonian defender Jérôme Onguéné joins Petrolul Ploiești
Jérôme Onguéné has signed for Petrolul Ploiești in Romania’s top flight as he looks to restart his career after leaving Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this year.
The Cameroonian defender, 27, was unveiled by the Romanian club on Tuesday, with a deal running through the 2025–26 season and an option for a further year.
It marks his first spell in Romanian football following a career that has taken him across several European leagues.
FC Petrolul Ploiești has reached an agreement with Cameroonian footballer Jérôme Junior Onguéné, signing a contract valid for the current season, with an option to extend for the next one, the club confirmed in its statement.
Onguéné’s arrival follows a difficult chapter in Germany.
Since joining Eintracht Frankfurt, he failed to make a single competitive appearance and was sent on multiple loan spells.
His departure in January 2025 ended a frustrating period in which injuries and limited opportunities stalled his progress.
Despite setbacks in Frankfurt, Onguéné boasts wide-ranging experience.
He began his professional journey in France before moving to Austria, where he impressed at Red Bull Salzburg and earned recognition as a reliable centre-back.
Loan moves later took him to Italy and Switzerland, where he continued to gain valuable playing time at club level.
Now, in Romania, Onguéné sees the chance to rebuild his career in a league that is less high-profile but offers regular competition.
Petrolul Ploiești, who compete in the Romanian SuperLiga, hope his presence will bolster their defensive options and bring leadership to a squad looking to make strides in the domestic campaign.
For the player, the move represents a fresh start at a critical stage.
At 27, Onguéné remains in his prime years as a defender and will aim to re-establish himself on the pitch after seasons of uncertainty.
His career to date reflects both promise and challenges: from Champions League nights with Salzburg to unfulfilled potential at Frankfurt. The Romanian opportunity, however, provides a platform to showcase his qualities once again.
If he can rediscover consistency in Ploiești, Onguéné could yet rebuild the momentum that once made him one of Africa’s most promising defensive prospects.
For now, his immediate focus will be on settling quickly in Romania and helping his new club meet their ambitions in the 2025–26 campaign.
