Egyptian FA defends conduct after Ethiopia files FIFA complaint
The Egyptian Football Association has pushed back firmly after Ethiopia lodged an official complaint with FIFA over their recent World Cup qualifier.
Egyptian officials say they are shocked by the claims, stressing that Ethiopia was treated with respect and given every courtesy before and during the match in Cairo. Egypt won the game 2-0 with goals from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush.
“We provided the Ethiopian team and its delegation with free tickets, a special stand, a warm welcome, and everything they asked for,” Egyptian Football Association Executive Director Mostafa Azzam said in a radio interview.
“What separates us is the match observer’s report, and it’s only natural for any team to look for excuses for losing and dropping points.”
“We didn’t really understand the reason for the complaint or its significance, other than the general attitude towards Egypt, because the fans didn’t do anything, and the match observers were present in the stadium and praised everything.”
Ethiopia’s complaint centers on claims of laser use by fans during penalty kicks and alleged disrespect of their anthem.
