2026 World Cup: It’s important for us to beat Rwanda – Nigeria defender William Troost-Ekong
Captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, William Troost-Ekong, has stressed that it is non-negotiable for the team to beat Rwanda this weekend in the qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to him, the Super Eagles won’t give up on securing qualification until the campaign is concluded.
Speaking ahead of the crucial fixture, the experienced defender underlined the team’s determination to fight until the campaign ends.
“Our desire, and willingness to play at the World Cup is still the same. We know what it is to play in a big tournament like the World Cup. I was part of the team in Russia 2018, and it was a memorable experience,” Troost-Ekong told reporters.
He added, “I know everyone is willing to give their best on the field tomorrow. We know we have to keep fighting, and not give up. We will give our best from the first minute, and give our all on the pitch. It’s important for us to beat Rwanda. The coach has told us to focus on the game against Rwanda, and not think beyond that.
Nigeria endured a slow start to the qualifiers and currently sits fourth in their group, behind Benin, Rwanda, and South Africa.
A win on Saturday, September 6, would significantly improve their chances, though the Super Eagles still face a difficult path to secure a ticket to the 2026 World Cup.
