English-Ivorian defender Marc Guehi weighing up Crystal Palace captaincy after failed Liverpool transfer

Marc Guehi’s future as Crystal Palace captain has been cast into uncertainty after his proposed move to Liverpool collapsed on transfer deadline day.

The defender, who had been set for a switch to Anfield, is now said to be considering relinquishing the armband following the breakdown of negotiations.

Guehi, born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, before relocating to England as a child, has become one of Palace’s most influential figures since joining from Chelsea.

His leadership earned him the captaincy, but recent events have left the 24-year-old questioning his position at the club.

According to The Guardian, Liverpool agreed a £35 million fee with Palace for Guehi and the player successfully completed his medical.

However, the deal collapsed late on after Palace manager Oliver Glasner intervened. It is claimed Glasner threatened to quit if the club sold their captain, forcing the board to withdraw from talks despite being prepared to cash in.

The dramatic U-turn has reportedly left Guehi “extremely unhappy.” With his current contract now inside its final 12 months, the centre-back faces an uncertain future. Palace risk losing him for free next summer unless a resolution can be found in the coming months.

While away on international duty with England, Guehi is believed to be weighing up his next steps and could release a statement to explain his perspective on the failed transfer. Relinquishing the captaincy is said to be among the options under consideration.
