Manchester United are reportedly nearing an agreement to sign Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp as a replacement for André Onana.

The Premier League side have been exploring options in the transfer market for weeks, seeking a new first-choice goalkeeper. Manager Ruben Amorim initially avoided addressing Onana’s future but signalled his intentions with a surprise selection decision on the opening day of the league campaign, dropping the Cameroonian international to the bench in favour of backup keeper Altay Bayindir.

That gamble backfired as Bayindir’s costly error handed the opposition a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford, raising questions about United’s goalkeeping stability.

Onana was reinstated in the Carabao Cup clash against Grimsby Town, but his performance did little to improve his standing.

The 28-year-old conceded twice against the League Two side before United were eliminated in a penalty shootout, increasing pressure on Amorim and further cementing doubts over Onana’s long-term future at the club.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that United’s search for a new goalkeeper is close to being resolved, with talks advancing rapidly for Lammens.

The 22-year-old Belgian is expected to feature in one final match for Royal Antwerp this weekend, after which negotiations between the two clubs are set to accelerate.

Lammens, widely regarded as one of Belgium’s promising young goalkeepers, joined Antwerp from Club Brugge last season and has impressed with his consistent performances.

His arrival would signal a significant shake-up in United’s goalkeeping department, with Amorim keen to establish a reliable presence between the posts.

For Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan in 2023, this development marks a rapid decline in his position at Old Trafford.

Despite a strong reputation built during his time in Italy, his tenure in England has been marked by inconsistency and costly errors, leading the club to reconsider their options.

United’s hierarchy is expected to finalise terms with Antwerp in the coming days, with a deal anticipated before the close of the transfer window.

Lammens’ signing would represent a crucial addition for Amorim, who has been under mounting scrutiny following a difficult start to the season.

If the transfer is completed, Lammens will become one of the youngest first-choice goalkeepers in the Premier League, tasked with helping stabilise a United side struggling to find form under their new manager.
