Moroccan international Azzedine Ounahi has officially signed with Spanish side Girona after the club reached a full agreement with Olympique de Marseille for his transfer.

The deal, valued at €6 million, marks the end of Ounahi’s stint in Ligue 1 as he prepares to begin a new chapter in La Liga. The 24-year-old midfielder is set to be unveiled by Girona this Thursday, with the official presentation taking place at the club’s facilities. Further details of his contract, including duration and potential performance-related clauses, are expected to be announced shortly.

As part of the agreement, Marseille have secured a significant sell-on clause, entitling them to a percentage of any future transfer involving Ounahi. This condition could prove beneficial for the French side should the midfielder’s market value rise during his time in Spain.

Ounahi’s move to Girona brings an end to his time at OM, where he arrived with considerable fanfare following an impressive run with Morocco at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Despite flashes of his technical ability and creativity in midfield, his tenure at Marseille was marked by inconsistency and limited opportunities to cement a regular starting role.

The transfer to Girona represents a chance for Ounahi to revitalise his club career in a competitive league environment. The Catalan club, which has risen steadily in the ranks of Spanish football, is seen as one of the more ambitious sides outside of the traditional powerhouses like FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Girona’s recent performances in La Liga have drawn attention, and the addition of Ounahi signals their intent to strengthen further ahead of the new season.

Known for his composure on the ball, quick decision-making, and ability to dictate the tempo of play, Ounahi is expected to bring added creativity and depth to Girona’s midfield. His move is also likely to raise the club’s profile in North Africa, given his prominent role in Morocco’s national team setup.

For Marseille, the decision to part ways with Ounahi appears to be part of broader restructuring efforts, as the club continues to adjust its squad under new technical direction. While his departure may raise questions among supporters, the inclusion of a resale clause offers Marseille a potential financial upside in the long run.

Girona, for their part, are acquiring a player who has proven himself on the international stage and still possesses untapped potential at the club level. With La Liga’s rigorous demands and exposure, the move could serve as the perfect platform for Ounahi to rediscover his form and flourish in a more consistent role.

Ounahi is expected to join his new teammates in training later this week as Girona finalise preparations for their upcoming fixtures. His integration into the squad will be closely watched, with both Girona and Moroccan fans hoping he can make an immediate impact.
