Ivorian forward Yakou Méïté nearing move to Austrian side LASK

Ivorian forward Yakou Méïté nearing move to Austrian side LASK

Yakou Méïté is on the verge of joining Austrian Bundesliga club LASK following his departure from Cardiff City earlier this summer.

The 29-year-old Ivorian striker, who came through the Paris Saint-Germain academy, is in advanced talks with the Linz-based side as he looks to reignite his career.

After leaving Cardiff a few weeks ago, Méïté has been searching for a new challenge in European football. Despite experiencing a relatively quiet 2024/25 campaign in the Championship, where he managed three goals in 34 appearances, the forward remains a player in demand.

His physical presence, versatility in attack, and proven experience at both club and international levels have continued to draw interest from across the continent.

Reports suggest that negotiations between Méïté and LASK are progressing positively. The Austrian club is reportedly ready to table a two-year contract, with the option to extend for a third season.

Such a deal would not only provide Méïté with stability but also offer LASK an experienced addition to their attacking options as they aim to strengthen ahead of the new Bundesliga campaign.

Méïté, who is currently valued at around €1.2 million, has had a career shaped by both promise and resilience. Having been developed at PSG’s renowned training centre, he moved on to establish himself in English football, most notably during his six-year spell at Reading, where he built a reputation for his powerful runs, aerial strength, and ability to deliver in crucial matches.

His move to Cardiff City in 2023 was seen as a fresh opportunity, but his impact in South Wales was limited compared to previous seasons.

Now, with a potential switch to Austria, the Ivorian international could be set for a new chapter. The Austrian Bundesliga is regarded as a competitive environment that continues to grow in stature, offering players a platform to showcase their talent at both domestic and European levels.

For Méïté, it presents the chance to rediscover his form, contribute goals, and bring valuable experience to a side that has ambitions of challenging the dominance of Red Bull Salzburg and Sturm Graz.

From LASK’s perspective, the move represents a calculated acquisition. Méïté’s profile suits their style of play, and his versatility—capable of operating as a central striker or in wider attacking roles—could provide tactical flexibility. Beyond his technical attributes, his leadership qualities and experience in different leagues may also prove crucial in guiding younger members of the squad.

While no official announcement has been made, all indications point towards the deal being finalised in the coming days. Should the transfer be completed, it would mark Méïté’s first venture into Austrian football, adding another chapter to a career that has already spanned France and England.

For a player eager to re-establish himself, the move to LASK could provide both the platform and the motivation needed to spark a revival. With the Austrian Bundesliga season approaching, the Ivorian striker’s future looks set to take a decisive turn as he prepares for a fresh challenge in Linz.
