Swedish-Eritrean striker Alexander Isak’s Liverpool push branded ‘a distraction’ by Newcastle boss Howe
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has acknowledged that Alexander Isak’s transfer saga is fast turning into a “distraction” for the team, as speculation intensifies over the striker’s push to join Liverpool.
Isak, born in Sweden to Eritrean parents, was absent from Newcastle’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday as he continues to agitate for a move.
His absence has added to mounting concerns at St James’ Park, where his standoff with the club is dominating headlines.
“We would like a resolution. I am talking about myself, I am sure the ownership, and the players. We need that clarity. You don’t need any distraction,” Howe said after the stalemate at Villa Park. “But I am not in control of that. I think only one person really (Isak) can control that.”
The striker’s stance has clearly unsettled parts of the fanbase. During the game, Newcastle supporters voiced their displeasure with chants of “there’s only one greedy b******,” directed at the 25-year-old.
Howe, however, praised the way the majority of supporters focused their energy on backing the team.
“Whatever happens, I think the support has acted really well today because they supported the team, which is always my big ask,” Howe noted.
“They’ve done that unbelievably well in some difficult moments during the four years. And then if afterwards they want to say something, I think they’re very free to do that.”
The Newcastle manager made clear that the striker’s future remains unresolved but insisted the club’s stance has not shifted.
“Nothing has changed, but the door is well and truly open. But yeah, he has to decide what he wants to do.”
Liverpool are reported to be preparing another approach for Isak after seeing an earlier £120 million bid rejected, with Newcastle holding firm on their £150m valuation.
