WAFCON 2026: Cameroon win first title after thumping Malawi 3-0 in final
Cameroon have won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the first time after defeating debutants Malawi 3-0 in the final in Rabat.
The Indomitable Lionesses produced a dominant performance at the Moulay Hassan Stadium on Sunday to claim their first continental crown.
Cameroon had already eliminated reigning champions Nigeria in the quarter-finals and hosts Morocco in the semi-finals before completing their remarkable run by overcoming Malawi in the final.
Cameroon dominate historic final
The Indomitable Lionesses took control of the contest early and went into half-time with a commanding 3-0 lead.
Marie Ngah was central to the victory, scoring twice, while Naomi Ndjoah Eto also found the net as Cameroon established a decisive advantage before the break.
The performance left Malawi facing a huge task to mount a comeback after the interval.
Cameroon continued to control the match and eventually completed a victory to secure the trophy.
First WAFCON title for Cameroon
The triumph represents a historic moment for Cameroonian women’s football, with the Indomitable Lionesses finally winning the continental title after previous appearances in the final.
The final was watched by several prominent figures, including Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe and Royal Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa.
Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o was also in the stands at the Moulay Hassan Stadium to witness the historic victory.
Malawi’s fairytale run ends in final
Malawi had reached the WAFCON final in their first appearance at the tournament after producing one of the competition’s biggest surprise campaigns.
The Scorchers had defeated Nigeria in the group stage before progressing through the knockout rounds to reach the decisive match.
However, they were unable to reproduce their earlier performances against a dominant Cameroon side and eventually finished as runners-up.
Algeria claimed third place, while hosts Morocco finished fourth after losing their playoff against Algeria.
Cameroon’s victory therefore brings the 2026 WAFCON to a historic conclusion, with the Indomitable Lionesses finally adding the African title to their collection.
