Senegalese duo Lamine Camara and Rassoul Ndiaye shine as Monaco defeat Le Havre in Ligue 1 opener

AS Monaco opened their Ligue 1 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Le Havre on Saturday, where Senegalese midfielder Lamine Camara played a central role in guiding his team to a confident start.

The Principality side, widely considered favourites ahead of the match at Stade Louis-II, pressed hard from the outset but struggled to break the deadlock until the 34th minute.

Their breakthrough came courtesy of a defensive mishap, as Le Havre’s Gautier Lloris inadvertently steered the ball into his own net to give Monaco the lead.

Monaco maintained their aggressive approach after the interval, determined to secure the points early. The hosts doubled their advantage in the 61st minute when Camara delivered a well-placed corner that found new signing Eric Dier, who rose highest to power home a header for 2-0. The set-piece showcased Camara’s precision and influence in midfield, underlining his importance in Adi Hütter’s system.

Le Havre, however, refused to fold. They struck back six minutes later, piecing together their most promising move of the contest. Moroccan playmaker Yassine Kechta showed sharp vision to pick out Senegalese teammate Rassoul Ndiaye, who calmly slotted past the Monaco goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The African duo’s combination briefly reignited hope for the visitors, offering a glimpse of their creative potential for the season ahead.

Despite the setback, Monaco quickly regained control and restored their two-goal cushion in the closing stages. A sweeping attacking move culminated in a clinical finish, sealing a 3-1 victory that reaffirmed their credentials as early contenders in Ligue 1. For Camara, who not only provided an assist but also dictated the tempo throughout the match, it was an ideal start to the campaign.

The performance confirmed Monaco’s growing confidence under Hütter. Their ability to mix relentless pressure with technical quality highlighted both their attacking depth and their midfield strength, particularly with Camara pulling the strings. The Senegalese international, still only in the early stages of his career, once again demonstrated maturity and composure beyond his years.

For Le Havre, the evening was a reminder of the challenges they will face against top-tier opposition. Despite flashes of brilliance, particularly from Kechta and Ndiaye, the visitors struggled to match Monaco’s intensity over the full 90 minutes.

Ndiaye’s goal provided a bright spot, showcasing his finishing instinct, while Kechta’s assist highlighted his creative vision in tight spaces. Yet, the duo’s effort was not enough to overturn Monaco’s dominance.

As the final whistle blew, Monaco’s 3-1 triumph set the tone for a season where they will seek consistency to challenge France’s elite. Camara’s contribution was particularly encouraging, suggesting that his role will be pivotal in Monaco’s pursuit of success both domestically and in Europe.

For Le Havre, meanwhile, the encouraging link-up between Kechta and Ndiaye will be something to build on, offering hope that their partnership can deliver valuable points in matches against less formidable opposition.

The Ligue 1 opener therefore not only highlighted Monaco’s efficiency but also signalled the potential of young African talents on both sides. With Camara making the difference for Monaco and Ndiaye offering a glimpse of Le Havre’s promise, both Senegalese midfielders left their mark on the first chapter of the new season.
